Two new updates on the Evander Kane fiasco.
Some good news for Kane and some bad news.
The biggest story of the weekend is without a doubt the ongoing saga of Evander Kane, a story that has now taken a drastic turn for the star forward.
On Saturday the San Jose Sharks stunned the hockey world when they announced that they had placed Evander Kane on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract with their organization. It was a stunning development as well as being as clear of an indication as possible that the Sharks have simply had enough of his antics, and now we have some more details on how things have played out over the weekend.
On Sunday it was announced that Kane had cleared waivers which paved the way for the Sharks to terminate his contract, but with both his agents and the National Hockey League Players Association threatening a grievance it was unclear if the Sharks had moved forward down that path. On Monday morning NHL insider Elliotte Friedman was able to confirm that the Sharks had indeed terminated his contract, devastating news for Kane who now leaves a staggering $22,885,000 of actual dollars on the table as a result of that decision.
Friedman has also noted that the NHLPA filed a grievance on behalf of Kane last night, which means that he could in theory still recoup some of that money if the grievance proves to be successful. That being said deputy NHL commissioner Bill Daly stated on the record this weekend that the Sharks and the league feel they have a very strong case in this matter.
There is some good news here for Kane however, that is of course if his agent is to be believed. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun spoke to Kane's agent, Dan Milstein, who informed him that there is currently a lot of interest in his client as an unrestricted free agent. Of course Milstein has a vested interest in making it appear as though Kane is drawing interest from several teams, as competition between teams for his services would drive up the price of the next contract he signs as a free agent.
LeBrun believes that Kane's next contract will only be a one year deal for the remainder of this current NHL season, but that means we could see Kane back in the NHL sooner rather than later.
