Two leading candidates emerge in Luke Schenn’s potential trade

And it’s hard to see the defenseman with either team.

Earlier this month, it was reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that the Calgary Flames had checked in on defenseman Luke Schenn of the Vancouver Canucks.

But the Flames aren’t the only ones and are reportedly facing much tough competition as Nick Alberga of Leafs Morning Take reports on Wednesday that the Boston Bruins are also leading contenders to acquire Schenn ahead of the trade deadline.

Schenn will be a free agent in the offseason and is likely to be moved as a rental ahead of the trade deadline. The Bruins and Flames have been shopping for an addition on the back end and Schenn would be a goof fit for either team.

The veteran blue liner can play 15-18 minutes per game in tough, defensive situation. Schenn, who won two Stanley Cup titles with the Lightning in 2019-20 and 2020-21, is also great to have on the penalty kills. His salary cap hit of just $850,000 is affordable for contenders like Boston and Calgary, looking for the best deal around in order to be cap-compliant.

Now the questions remain if the Canucks will accept to deal with such a close rival in the Flames or even with the Bruins that beat them back in 2011 in the Stanley Cup finals.
