A former National Hockey League player and coach has shared some heartbreaking news on social media.

Late on Sunday night, former NHLer Tony Granato issued a statement in which he revealed that he had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. The diagnosis will subsequently force him to step away from his duties as a broadcaster for the Blackhawks, the NHL Network and NBC Sports Chicago.

Here is Granato's statement, unedited and in full:

I debated how to share this news but I will be taking a temporary leave of absence from NBC Sports Chicago and the Blackhawks broadcasts, as well as NHL Network.
I was recently diagnosed with a form of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and will begin treatment this week.
I wish I could reach out to everyone individually, but felt like this was the best way to share the news.
My family, faith, and friends will be my strength to help me through my treatments. I appreciate all the love and support I have received already.
With the holiday season here, cherish the times with your loved ones, as I know I will.

Over his lengthy career in and around the National Hockey League, Granato has left his mark on several NHL markets. He played for the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks during his 774 game career and would go on to coach the Colorado Avalanche, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings.

I would like to wish Tony a full and speedy recovery, hopefully we can see him return to the broadcast booth sooner rather than later.
