You have to wonder if this signals the end of controversial defenseman Tony DeAngelo's career in the National Hockey League.

On Monday morning, it was officially announced that DeAngelo had signed a new one year deal but it won't be in the NHL. Instead the news was broken by Kontinental Hockey League franchise SKA Saint Petersburg who indicated that DeAngelo will wear number 24 with their team moving forward.

This decision appears to come as a result of DeAngelo being unable to secure himself an NHL contract this summer or even so much as a professional tryout offer, with reports that at least one NHL team declined an opportunity to sign him to a PTO.

It comes as relatively little surprise given that DeAngelo has become a polarizing figure in the league, clashing with coaches and teammates alike, bouncing between 3 teams over the course of the past 4 NHL seasons and never playing more than 70 games in a single season during that time period.

Most recently, DeAngelo spent 31 games as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes that saw him put up 3 goals and 8 assists for a total of 11 points, finishing the regular season with a plus minus rating of -7. He also appeared in 9 playoff games for the Hurricanes last season, picking up a pair of assists in the playoffs.

I can't imagine that going to play hockey in Russia during a time of war is an ideal scenario for any player not from that country, but unfortunately for DeAngelo he may very well have worn out his welcome in the NHL.

That doesn't mean that he can't return after a stint with SKA, but it seems like a long shot at this point.
