There’s “no guarantee Connor McDavid will re-sign in Edmonton” after new info surfaces in media

This new analysis has fans frustrated, but it might be because it unfortunately makes sense. Full story below:

Could Connor McDavid leave Edmonton at the end of his contract? That’s the question Greg Wyshynski felt the need to answer on Jeff Marek’s The Sheet latest podcast and his answer has angered a lot of Oilers’ fans.

Many pundits, fans and even insiders believed that when star forward Leon Draisaitl signed a massive extension to remain in Edmonton for the foreseeable future, it automatically meant that it was because he had received confirmation from McDavid that he too would re-sign and stay put with the Oilers once contract expires in the summer of 2026.

However, Wyshynski isn’t as convinced and believes that while there are good changes that McDavid wants to remain an Oiler, the decision might be greatly affected by the next upcoming postseasons and if Edmonton can finally hoist a Stanley Cup.

Wyshynski even points to other teams, including the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers, who could choose in 2026 to make the bold move and offer the world to McDavid as a free agent in order to land the best player in the world. Some fans will want the Toronto Maple Leafs to get in on that idea if that ever happens.

“I feel like we all kind of exhaled and said Connor’s an Oiler for life when Leon signed and I don’t believe that’s the case anymore.”

The fact remains that even though McDavid is a proud Edmonton Oiler, he has yet to win the Stanley Cup with the team, and could eventually choose to test free agency in 2026 and join a real contender.

Do I believe this whilst I’m writing it? As of right now, I don’t. I believe that there is a huge meaning behind Draisaitl’s long-term extension in Edmonton and the fact that he was reassured by McDavid that he too was staying put.

Now could it change if the Oilers don’t make it all the way this time around to the Stanley Cup Final, proudly hoisting the Cup…? Ask me then.
