Terrible update on Hughes and Pettersson from Rick Tocchet.

The head coach of the Vancouver Canucks shared a poor prognosis on both of his star players.

This is the last thing that the Vancouver Canucks fan base wanted to hear.

On Sunday, reports emerged that both star forwards Elias Pettersson and star defenseman Quinn Hughes were notably absent from the team's Sunday skate and unfortunately that news was only the start of the bad news regarding those two very important players. Members of the media have now had the opportunity to catch up with Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet following the team's practice on Sunday and the update from Tocchet himself paints an even less promising picture than their absences did.

Tocchet confirmed on Sunday that both players would be out for a while, with the news being less than ideal in both cases but considerably worse for reigning Norris Trophy winner and Canucks captain Quinn Hughes. Tocchet confirmed that both men would miss the team's upcoming road trip, and it seems likely that they may miss even more than that.

In the case of Pettersson, Tocchet suggested that his star forward is roughly a week away from a return from injury. That is a really tough break for Pettersson who just broke a 6 game point drought by picking up a pair of goals against the San Jose Sharks just before the holiday break.

The news regarding Hughes is unfortunately even worse with Tocchet informing reporters that his captain is out on a week to week basis which could see him miss significant time moving forward.

There's simply no way to sugarcoat this news, it is simply a terrible update for the Vancouver Canucks especially with such a tight race in the Metropolitan Division where the Los Angeles Kings(45), Edmonton Oilers(45), Canucks(41) and Calgary Flames(41) are all with 4 points of each other.
