Trade and signing rumours always get hockey fans excited in Toronto, but this report that a transaction was almost made by Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas this summer will have fans wondering why it fell through.

According to Nick Kypreos, the Maple Leafs offered a one-year contract to then-free agent forward Max Domi. When Domi became an unrestricted free agent this past July, Toronto looked to tempt him with a contract, seeing that the forward is from Toronto and could live the dream of playing for a franchise that means so much to his father Tie and the rest of the Domi family.

However, Kypreos explained why the deal fell through: the money offered by the Maple Leafs was significantly less than he was offered by the Chicago Blackhawks, who he ultimately chose to sign with on July 14th.

With Domi off to a great start this season, putting up 10 goals and 20 points, along with 33 penalty minutes in 28 games, you have to wonder what he could have brought to Toronto. Watching him on a struggling team in Chicago has to make you wonder.

At the same time, the pressing need remains on the blue line for the Maple Leafs, but it’s always fun to imagine what a player like Domi could have added to the roster.

Would you have like to see Domi in a Leafs’ uniform at the start of the season?
