Jamie Benn is once again a star. The Dallas Stars’ captain has nearly doubled his point-per-game pace from last season, with 26 points and 10 goals in his 26 games so far in 2022-23.
General manager Jim Nill spoke about the resurgence of his leader and revealed to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan what happened Benn did to get back on track and meet expectations. The captain dropped some pounds and changed his approach to the game:
“He’s rejuvenated,” Nill said. “He changed his training last summer. He lost some weight. He was on the ice all summer, less weight, more speed training. He knew his game needed to get quicker and faster.”
The GM also believes Benn appreciates the responsibility of mentoring young players and playing with them this season.
“He’s still the old Jamie Benn,” Nill added. “He plays a physical game, and the way he plays he’s fighting his way the whole time. There’s not a lot of players like that in today’s game.”
The same thing can be said about Benn’s teammate Tyler Seguin, whose decline was primarily due to injuries. He is now healthy and back to his old self, to the delight of the Stars’ fanbase and GM.
“I don’t think people understand how hard it can be on the player,” Nill said. “People think, you have surgery, you’re better now. But it really takes a year, year and a half to get you back to where you are. So right now, we’re reaping the rewards.”
In 26 games, Seguin has put up four goals ans 19 points. Both Benn and Seguin just missed the 50-point mark last season, and it doesn’t look like it will happen again this year.
