Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Simon Benoit takes exception with the behavior of former Maple Leaf Michael Bunting.

The Toronto Maple Leafs may not have a favorable opinion of one of their former players, at least that is true when it comes to Maple Leafs defenseman Simon Benoit.

On Saturday night, Benoit and and the Maple Leafs clashed with the Pittsburgh Penguins and emerged victorious over the Pens and former Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas, picking up a 4-2 victory. In spite of the victory however, Benoit would walk away from the contest with a rather negative opinion about another former Maple Leaf.

Speaking with reporters on Sunday morning, Benoit was asked about his clashes with former Maple Leafs forward Michael Bunting on Saturday night. Although Benoit would acknowledge that Bunting is effective in his role on the ice, it was clear that Benoit also did not respect some aspects of Bunting's game. In fact, Benoit would go so far as to outright label the often controversial Bunting as a "diver" while responding to the question.

"He’s good at his job," admitted Benoit. "I’ve played against him a couple of years now. That’s part of his game. I just don’t like divers."

I don't expect that this will come as a surprise to Bunting himself as it seemed the two men had plenty to say to one another on the ice on Saturday night, with the officials having to separate the two men at multiple points throughout the evening.

There is already a solid built-in rivalry between the Maple Leafs and Penguins these days thanks to the acrimonious split between the Maple Leafs organization and former general manager Kyle Dubas, who now serves as president and general manager of the Penguins, and it seems that this feud between Benoit and Bunting may have added another wrinkle to what is quickly turning into a heated rivalry.
