Great news came to Pittsburgh earlier this week when captain Sidney Crosby signed a two-year extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins for his usual $8.7M US per season, extending him through the 2026-27 season. However, on Wednesday morning, it was a bit of bad news that took over the team.
Training camp opened earlier today and defenseman Erik Karlsson was not on the ice with the rest of his Penguins’ teammates. He is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, the team announced.
Fans have been hoping to see Karlsson have a bounce back season after recording just 11 goals and 45 assists in his first campaign with the Penguins in 2023-24.
After winning the Norris Trophy for the 2022-23 season, when he recorded 101 points with the San Jose Sharks, the Penguins were looking forward to add Karlsson to their roster.
Now, they hope to have him healthy as soon as possible and feeling 100 percent for the upcoming season.
The Penguins have their opener on Oct. 9 against the New York Rangers.
