The update on injured Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Conor Timmins is not good.

On Monday, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe was able to share an update on Timmins and unfortunately it sounds like the Leafs will be starting the regular season without him. For the first time since Timmins was injured on Friday night Keefe used the word "significant" to describe the injury and also indicated that this would be a "week to week" type of scenario rather than merely a day to day situation.

Timmins was injured when he was on the receiving end of a rather tame looking hit from Montreal Canadiens forward Tanner Pearson but, although the replay shows a relatively mild impact to the upper-body of Timmins, something must have happened below the boards that was simply not caught on camera.

Suffering a serious injury in the preseason is never going to be ideal for any team in the National Hockey League but that is especially true when it comes to teams that are up against the salary cap. At a cap hit of just $1.1 million, Timmins is a relatively affordable option for the Maple Leafs on the blue line and it will be difficult to replace his presence on the blue line while he is out with an injury.

Keefe did not share any additional details on the specific nature of the injury.
