Sheldon Keefe names new starting goaltender on Saturday.
Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe had a tough call to make ahead of Saturday's game against the Nashville Predators.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been put in an unfortunate position with an injury to goaltender Joseph Woll who was quickly establishing himself as the organization's starting netminder, and as a legitimate goaltender in the National Hockey League.
Now, barring any trades or free agent signings, the Maple Leafs will have to move forward with veteran netminder Martin Jones or goaltender Ilya Samsonov who has struggled with consistency in a Maple Leafs uniform. Neither choice is ideal but nonetheless those are the options for Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe, who has now made his choice.
On Saturday, Keefe revealed that it would be goaltender Ilya Samsonov who would get the start against the Nashville Predators, a move that comes as relatively little surprise. In spite of the fact that Samsonov has not been good for the Maple Leafs this season, he has been solid for the Maple Leafs in the past, with a good first season with the Leafs in which he had a 2.33 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.
Samsonov's numbers look drastically different this season however with a 3.58 goals against average and a .878 save percentage, but perhaps the pressure of being thrust back into the number one spot will help motivate him to turn things around.
