The San Jose Sharks and the Winnipeg Jets have pulled off a relatively minor trade on the second day of free agency in the NHL.

The San Jose Sharks and the Winnipeg Jets have pulled off a relatively minor trade, swapping a pair of players on Sunday.

Sportsnet Ken Wiebe was the first to break the news, revealing that the Jets were trading away the rights of restricted free agent defenseman Leon Gawanke to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for another defenseman in Artemi Kniazev.

It comes as relatively little surprise to see Gawanke traded given some of the public comments he made this year. Gawanke was vocal about his feelings regarding the Jets organization, feeling the team had not given him a fair shot to make the National Hockey League. Although the Jets will never confirm as much, it seems exceedingly likely that those comments are what led to him being traded today.

Gawanke has spent the last several seasons of his career in the American Hockey League playing for the Manitoba Moose, last season he had 20 goals and 25 assists for a total of 45 points over 68 games played.

Kniazev is in a smilar boat having played just one NHL games during his professional hockey career. He spent last season with the AHL's San Jose Barracuda where he had 5 goals and 23 assists for a total of 28 points in 61 games.

A relatively minor deal, and hopefully one that works out for all parties involved.
