Shane Wright draws harsh criticism after his first NHL preseason.

Shane Wright earns a tough review.

As you might expect coming into a preseason in the National Hockey League, there was a ton of hype surrounding this year's top draft picks, This was especially true this time around considering all of the drama that went down at the draft, much of which was centered around the man eventually picked by the Seattle Kraken at number 4, young centerman Shane Wright.

Wright was for many years projected to be the top pick in the draft, but a series of factors would lead to him falling a few spots down the draft with the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, and Arizona Coyotes all eventually choosing to go in a different direction before the Kraken stepped in to take him 4th overall. As a result of this fall in the draft many were excited to see how Wright would perform in the preseason, especially when some extra motivation now fueling his desire to make the NHL.

On Saturday morning one former NHL scout decided to give his review of Wright's performance thus far at the NHL level, and I must admit that the review was a little harsh. The review comes from former Montreal Canadiens' scout Grant McCagg, a man who was quite critical of Wright coming into the draft and one who correctly predicted that the Habs would not be using their selection on Wright. McCagg has been blunt when it comes to his dissecting of Wright's game, and he was once again when providing a review of his work in the preseason.

From McCagg:

Wright played his final exhibition game yesterday. No shots on goal and no shifts on the PP. In five exhibition games he picked up an assist and was 28 percent (13 for 47) on faceoffs. I suspect he'll get a 9-game trial. Hopefully, the stats improve or likely headed back to OHL.

McCagg of course knows the kind of responses he's baiting out of fans with a review of this nature, but no doubt that is part of the fun for him. He did also point out that only one player from this year's draft had managed to score a goal in the preseason, taking a little bit of the heat off Wright.
