Sam Reinhart ejected after dangerous hit leads to injury.
Sam Reinhart ejected after knee on knee leaves Isac Lundestrom unable to get up under his own power.
An ugly situation in sunny Florida has left one player injured and resulted in another being thrown out of the game.
On Saturday night, during a clash between the Anaheim Ducks and Florida Panthers, Ducks forward Isac Lundestrom suffered a fairly serious looking injury late in the first period when he was on the receiving end of a knee on knee hit from Panthers forward Sam Reinhart.
This was about as textbook a knee on knee as you're going to see with Reinhart clearly extending the leg and catching Lundestrom in a dangerous way as a result of that. Here is a look at the replay:
The National Hockey League officials on the ice would initially call this one a major penalty and after a fairly quick review the decision was made to uphold that call and toss Reinhart from the game as a result of the hit. The pro-Panthers crowd at Amerant Bank Arena weren't happy with the call even giving the league's officials a classic "Refs you suck" chant, but I do think the officials had little choice but to make the call that they did.
The real question now is whether or not Reinhart will get a call from the NHL's Department of Player Safety, something that I suspect will depend entirely on the severity of Lundestrom's injury.
It certainly didn't look good on the ice with Lundestrom unable to get back to his skates under his own power, and needing an escort from two of his teammates to even make it off the ice.
