Rumors that a Red Wings legend is set to return to the NHL

Whoa! Another coaching change coming!?

Trevor Connors

In case you missed it earlier today, the Boston Bruins fired head coach Jim Montgomery.

The Bruins are 8-9-3 with a -21 goal differential. Not good. Good enough for 4th in the NHL's Atlantic Division.

You know what's even worse, though?

6th place in the NHL's Atlantic Division.

That's the position of the Detroit Red Wings, another team who has struggled out of the gate this season and another team whose coaching staff is under deep scrutiny. Head coach Derek Lalonde is in his third season as the Red Wings' coach and it looks like he's going to lead them to a third consecutive season of missing the playoffs... assuming that GM Steve Yzerman doesn't make a change.

Enter: Sergei Fedorov.

Huh?

Spittin' Chiclets co-host Matt Murley shared his opinion on the show's latest episode stating that he feels Fedorov would be the perfect fit behind the bench for the Red Wings given his experience and his history with Yzerman.

Check it out:

For the record, Fedorov is currently unemployed after being dismissed by Metallurg Magnitogorsk after failing to make the KHL playoffs last season. He managed to guide the team to back to back Game 7 Gagarin Cup victories in the two seasons prior, however.

Would the Red Wings welcome Fedorov back into the fold?

Remember this is the team that seems to hold a grudge against Fedorov for his decision to sign a lucrative RFA contract with the Carolina Hurricanes back in 1998. The Red Wings matched the contract, but the relationship was fractured forevermore. Despite being one of the greatest players in franchise history and the fact that he's been a Hockey Hall of Famer for nearly a decade now, the Red Wings still refuse to retire his number #91 to the rafters.

So, I ask again... would the Red Wings welcome Fedorov back into the fold?
