Rumor: Oilers running out of time with Connor McDavid.
He believes McDavid may want to move.
Perhaps the biggest criticism of the Edmonton Oilers over the last several years has been the perception that the Oilers have largely wasted a number of high end draft picks, either through poor development or simply by not surrounding them with a competent supporting cast.
The arrival of generational superstar Connor McDavid and his explosion onto the scene in the National Hockey League helped pushed those criticisms to the side, for at least a little while, but it would seem that they may be rearing their ugly heads once again.
On a recent episode of the Spittin Chiclets podcast, former NHL player Paul "Biznasty" Bissonnette expressed his belief that McDavid may be running out of patience in Edmonton, and even went a step further by suggesting that the Oilers may need to seriously consider the possibility of a trade.
"They should go to Connor and say 'Are you considering re-signing here?'" said Bissonette last week. "And if not try to get as big a return as possible."
Why would McDavid be so eager to leave Edmonton? Bissonnette pointed to the fact that both McDavid and teammate Leon Draisaitl are playing like two of the best players in the NHL right now, but in spite of that the Oilers are still struggling to compete for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Combined with the added scrutiny and pressure of playing in an intense media market like Edmonton and you may have a recipe for disaster.
"I think at some point living in Edmonton and being in those surroundings.... my understanding is that Connor has a house in California and that he escapes to California quite a bit, just to get away from all the noise," said Bissonnette.
Bissonnette made the comments in spite of the fact that his co-host, former NHL player Ryan Whitney, is a big Oilers fan.
"I'm not trying to sh*t in your cornflakes because I know you're a big Oilers fan, but it might be the end of the road for you guys."
McDavid has 3 years remaining beyond this season on his contract at a cap hit of $12.5 million per season and a full no movement clause, all of which would make trading him incredibly difficult. If a trade involving McDavid were to happen though, you would have to believe it could go down as the biggest trade in the history of the sport.
