Rumor: Kyle Dubas considering move that would worsen Maple Leafs' financial situation
Could the former Leafs GM bring in a member of his old organization?
It's now been just over one year since the Toronto Maple Leafs made the decision to terminate general manager Kyle Dubas and replace him with former Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving.
It wouldn't be long before Dubas would resurface, taking an executive position with the Pittsburgh Penguins before eventually naming himself the general manager. And while he's already acquired former Leafs player Michael Bunting from their days together in Toronto, he could be considering bringing in another player he was once in charge of.
According to NHL Trade Rumors, Dubas could be preparing to send an offer sheet to disgruntled forward Nick Robertson, which would add to their already difficult financial situation.
"Rumors indicate the Penguins are contemplating a one-year, $2.1 million offer sheet for Robertson. This strategic move could put the Leafs in a difficult position, as they are currently pressed tightly against the NHL salary cap. Matching such an offer sheet would require significant financial maneuvering for Toronto."
Currently a restricted free agent, Robertson is coming off his entry-level contract and feels he hasn't gotten enough of an opportunity to thrive with the Leafs. He appeared in 56 games last season, scoring 14 goals with 13 assists. He also appeared in six of Toronto's seven games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the rival Boston Bruins, recording zero points.
As it currently stands, the Leafs have just under $1.3 million left in remaining salary cap space. We've already seen a pair of offer sheets extended by the St. Louis Blues to now-former Oilers Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway; could Nick Robertson be the next to receive such an offer?
