UPDATE: According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, there will be NO supplemental discipline for Los Angeles Kings defenseman Alex Edler for his hit last night on Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid.

From Seravalli:

For our earlier report on this developing story, please read below.

In case you missed it last night, the Edmonton Oilers dropped a 3-1 decision to the Los Angeles Kings in a very chippy affair.

And the chippiness was mostly all a result of a 2nd period hit by Kings defenseman Alex Edler on Oilers superstar Connor McDavid in the neutral zone. McDavid picked up the puck near the Oilers' bench and attempted to break into the zone all his own when Edler hung a leg out for a pretty questionable knee on knee hit.

McDavid went down hard, Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse came from his own blue line to fight Edler and... well... all Hell broke loose for a moment.

Check it out:

Edler ended up with a two minute minor for kneeing, which was offset by Nurse's instigator minor. McDavid looked to be okay after the collision, despite getting up slowly. He played the rest of the game, but there has been no official update on his status as of yet.

After the game McDavid's linemate Zach Hyman had some pretty pointed words for Edler, calling the play an "extremely dangerous" hit.

"Obviously, I didn't like the hit," Hyman told reporters postgame following the Oilers' 3-1 defeat. "Good on Nurse for jumping in there and sticking up for Connor."

"One of those plays where you beat a D, and he sticks a knee out. Dangerous play. ... I don't know if he's doing it intentionally or whatnot, but you just can't do that."

Interestingly enough, Hyman recalled a similar hit from Edler on himself, back in 2021 when Hyman was with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edler was with the Vancouver Canucks.

"(Edler) did (it) to me a couple of years ago," Hyman said during the game's second intermission, per team beat reporter Tony Brar. "Exact same play. ... He just did it to Connor. Same thing. It's an extremely dangerous play."

Here's the hit in question:

Yikes...

I get what Hyman is saying here, but I think Edler's hit on himself is much more egregious than the hit on McDavid. Either way though, Edler does seem to be establishing a bit of a reputation for hanging a leg out when he's liable to miss a hit. That's likely not the type of reputation that the respected veteran Dman is hoping to project.
