On Thursday night, New York Islander rookie Maxim Tsyplakov caught Philadelphia Flyers’ Ryan Poehling with a high hit as he was backchecking in attempt to stop the Flyer, who was driving the net. The hit send Poehling spiraling to the ice and the move was reviewed on Friday as Tsyplakov was called for a hearing with NHL Player Safety.

This just in now, Tsyplakov has been suspended three games for his illegal check to the head of Poehling.

Officials reviewed the play to determine if there was a major penalty. However, it was deemed there was no penalty on the play. There were some penalties on the play seeing that Flyers forward Joel Farabee came over to confront Tsyplakov, taking a slashing penalty on the play.

Poehling left the game and did not return. His teammates Scott Laughton was also fined $5,000 for cross-checking Tsyplakov late in regulation.

The Flyers went on to win the game 5-3, extending Philly’s point streak to four games.

This is the first time Tsyplakov has received supplemental discipline from the NHL. He is an undrafted winger from Russia, who signed a one-year contract with the Islanders back in May.

In 44 games so far this season, he has recorded seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points, placing him eighth in New York in scoring.
