Reporter stirs the pot about Connor McDavid’s future in Edmonton
The captain reacted to the provocative question during his end-of-season press conference:

The Edmonton Oilers fell short of expectations, losing to the Vegas Golden Knights in six games of the second round series. Captain Connor McDavid won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL scoring champion for the fifth time (153 points) and Rocket Richard Trophy for most goals for the first time (64) and led the League in assists (89).
But he doesn’t care about that. Despite pointing out that he believes the Oilers are a better team now than last year, McDavid also put it out there that failure is what has come out again this season.
“It’s Cup or bust for this group,” McDavid said Tuesday. “Just where everyone is at with their career, that’s the expectation.”
The core players want it badly and with McDavid signed through the next three seasons and Leon Draisaitl for two, the captain strongly believes Edmonton will continue to be Stanley Cup contenders in the imminent future.
“Yeah, I certainly feel that way,” McDavid said. “I think if you look at the group here, everyone is signed on for the next number of years, nobody is aging, everyone is in the prime of their career. I think we have the opportunity to knock on the door as much as we want. Ultimately, it’s going to be up to us to put it all together.”
However, one reporter wanted to press the issue a bit more and asked McDavid about his biological clock, reminding him that he is 26 years old and that the window of opportunity might be closing in. The captain laughed off the question about his biological clock, which could have been asked only to provoke some juicy trade rumours to emerge once again out of Edmonton throughout the offseason.
“Yeah, I want to win. Everyone wants to win, every year. But that said, I’m 26 years old, I got lots of great years ahead. I’m not worried about time, if that’s what you’re asking.”
McDavid made that clear. The Oilers did get some quality players at the deadline and will look to fix the goaltending issue during the summer. I am sure that knowing how confident McDavid is about the future will motivate Oilers’ management to get key pieces on board for a successful playoff run in 2024.
