The Detroit Red Wings have already pulled off a head-scratching move today, sending offensive-minded defenseman Jake Walman along with a draft selection to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for future considerations. Many are speculating that this could be a salary-cap dump as the pre-cursor to a bigger move by Detroit.
And according to recent reports, the Red Wings could in fact be interested in one or both of a pair of big names - pending free agent forward Jake Guentzel and goaltender John Gibson.
Thanks to the trade of Walman to San Jose, the Red Wings have freed up $3.4 million worth of salary cap space. Understandably, a major chunk of their available space is going to be used to re-sign franchise cornerstone Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider.
Additionally, the Red Wings could be working to re-sign pending free agent forward Patrick Kane, while they are said to continuing to engage in talks with defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere.
Should the Red Wings potentially acquire John Gibson, one would think that the oft-injured Ville Husso would be sent the other way to the west coast, while a potential signing of Guentzel would be a major offensive gain.
