Early in the goings of last night's much anticipated matchup between the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights and there was some serious controversy.
Avs superstar Nathan MacKinnon managed to somehow avoid a game ejection for a head shot hit on Golden Knights forward Nolan Patrick that sent Patrick from the game.
Check it out:
Yikes... with Patrick's history of head injuries that could be literally career threatening...
MacKinnon was not penalized on the play and the early reports are that he will NOT receive any supplemental discipline from NHL Player Safety.
I honestly don't know what to expect from NHL Player Safety anymore. On the one hand this is a text-book hit to the head completely away from the puck. On the other hand, maybe it's just a battle for body positioning where Patrick took an inadvertent shoulder to the head? I honestly don't know, but I fully expected MacKinnon to have a hearing to discuss it all with NHL Player Safety.
In the meantime, we'll away word on Patrick's status.
