The Detroit Red Wings and general manager Steve Yzerman have made a relatively minor roster move to kick off the weekend, but it is one that appears to be deeply unpopular with Red Wings fans judging by the responses that have come fast and furious.

On Saturday morning, the Red Wings announced that they would be calling up defenseman Justin Holl from the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins, a move that appears to have been a highly controversial one as far as the fan base is concerned.

Holl has been heavily criticized by fans throughout his time in a Red Wings uniform and it seemed after training camp at the National Hockey League's preseason that the Red Wings were starting to see things the same way. The team made headlines when it was revealed that Holl, and his cap hit of $3.4 million per season, would begin the regular season in the AHL, but that now appears to have been short lived.

Holl, who is in the second year of a questionable 3 year deal, has been officially called up to the main roster.

The responses to the move have seemingly been universally negative, with what is in the grand scheme of things a relatively minor move resulting in considerable negativity from the fan base. Here are just a few examples:

There's no telling how long Holl will remain on the Red Wings NHL roster following today's move, but it seems clear that the decision to call him up is both a controversial and unpopular one.
