Quinn Hughes obliterates Canucks record on Sunday.

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes has completely destroyed a Vancouver Canucks record.

The Vancouver Canucks have just watched defenseman Quinn Hughes completely demolish one of their franchise records, and the only question now is just how badly Hughes will blow the competition out of the water moving forward.

Thanks to a goal by Canucks teammate Jake DeBrusk, Hughes has now established himself as the all-time assists leader in Canucks franchise history, passing former Canucks defenseman Alex Edler who previously held the record. Edler's record stood at 310 assists with the Canucks but the assist on DeBrusk's goal today gave Hughes assist number 311 giving him sole possession of the record.

Now I mentioned that Hughes obliterated the previous record but beating it by a single assist may not seem like a massive gap to the casual observer. What makes Hughes' record so much more impressive than the previous record held by Alex Edler is that Hughes has achieved the mark in 537 fewer games played. 537 games is more games than most players get over a full career in the National Hockey League, and who knows how many more assists Hughes will tally if he goes on to play an additional 537 games in a Canucks uniform.

Hughes will of course continue to add to that total during his tenure with the Canucks so who knows how badly he will break the previous record when it is all said and done. In fact the Canucks captain was already pushing the record forward during today's game against the Detroit Red Wings, picking up two additional assists over the course of the game on top of his record breaking assist earlier in the game.

That now brings Hughes to 313 career assists as a member of the Vancouver Canucks, 3 ahead of Edler's record, and there will no doubt be plenty more to come.
