The Winnipeg Jets hope to improve after failing to reach the playoffs in a season they were expecting to contend for the Stanley Cup. They kicked things off this summer with a new coaching staff led by Rick Bowness, but it didn’t take long for rumours to emerge that captain Blake Wheeler might want out… Many insiders reported that Wheeler is looking to get traded with the Jets open to find a destination with an interesting package in return for his services.
Many scenarios have come up and on Thursday, it was Spinorama Hockey’s turn to suggest a trade involving the Jets’ captain. And it’s no small transaction. They propose a three-way trade which would involve the Jets, the Vancouver Canucks and the Arizona Coyotes. They could see the Canucks acquiring Wheeler in return for Conor Garland and Lawson Crouse, though the Jets would also need to part with Logan Stanley, who be heading to Arizona. Vancouver would also send a second-round pick to the desert, while the Coyotes would retain half of Wheeler’s contract.
Wheeler has two years left on his contract with an annual salary-cap hit of $8.25 million. His full no-movement clause reverts to a five-team trade list on July 1. He is scheduled for unrestricted free agency following the 2023-24 season, along with current teammate Mark Scheifele.
However, he is not getting any younger at 35 ans his it for two more seasons could dampen his trade value with the salary cap rising by $1 million for 2022-23.
Would you pull the trigger on this deal?
