Peter Laviolette on the next captain of the New York Rangers.
The head coach of the New York Rangers comments on the future of the team's captaincy.
The New York Rangers put an end to what was a very chaotic situation on Friday when they finally made a move to trade now former Rangers' captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks. The trade not only put an end to months of speculation surrounding Trouba's future with the franchise but it also marked the end of his era as captain of one of the National Hockey League's original six franchises.
Trouba has already made comments suggesting that he is moving on and looking forward to joining the Anaheim Ducks, in spite of the fact that he did not like how this bit of business was handled, but the big question now is who will serve as the leader for the Rangers moving forward?
Less than 24 hours after Trouba was traded to the Ducks, Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette was already being bombarded with questions regarding the future for the Rangers when it comes to announcing their next captain.
To be perfectly honest it doesn't sound like the Rangers or Laviolette have given the situation a great deal of thought or consideration, with Laviolette informing reporters on Saturday that he doesn't see a new captain being named anytime soon. In fact Laviolette indicated that the team will move forward with their current leadership group in spite of the gap left by the recent departure of their now former captain.
Laviolette would only concede that there may be another player who will eventually get an "A" on their jersey this season but that is as far as he would go, clearly indicating that there won't be a captain named midseason.
It sounds like the Rangers may have to wait a while for a replacement.
