Penguins ask emergency goalie to attend their practice
After DeSmith was injured in Game 1…

What happened in Game 1 of the series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers is short of exceptional. Louis Domingue didn’t think the referees were serious. He played hero for the Penguins when he was called to take over Casey DeSmtith’s spot in between the pipes in the second overtime. Domingue then became the winning goalie in a Game 1 triple OT victory over the Rangers, 4-3.
While that’s incredible in itself, the rest remains a bit more unsure for the Penguins as DeSmith missed practice on Wednesday.
Domingue was there, but the Penguins needed the help of emergency backup goalie Reid Robertson, per TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie.
Robertson was at MSG last night as the only emergency backup goalie and could have been called in between the Penguins’ pipes on Tuesday if something had happened to Domingue.
While Domingue was the first goalie in NHL history to enter the game in the second OT period or later, he got the win, but needed help in practice on Wednesday.
Robertson stepped in. Fans await news on DeSmith, who limped off the ice and down the tunnel in the right corner.
DeSmith got the start after the Penguins announced that Tristan Jarry was expected to miss Games 1 and 2 of their first-round matchup with the New York Rangers. The goalie missed the last six games of the regular season with a lower-body injury. After making 36 saves in a 6-3 win over the Islanders on April 14, Jarry was evaluated and given a status of week-to-week.
Head coach Mike Sullivan explained after the option skate that he’d anticipate goaltender Alex D’Orio being recalled from WBS today. He was recalled moments later.
In the meantime, the Penguins get the help of Robertson.
