Ovechkin dealing with injury after game in Russia.

The captain of the Washington Capitals is reportedly dealing with an injury after playing in what was billed as the “Match of the Year.”

The captain of the Washington Capitals appears to be a little banged up.

Recently, Ovechkin participated in what was billed as the "Match of the Year," something of a Kontinental Hockey League vs National Hockey League All-Star game held in Russia. It would be New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin who would steal the show on that day, but it may have also been a day that caused or aggravated an injury when it comes to NHL superstar Alex Ovechkin.

Ovechkin was a participant in that match but now there are reports coming out of Russia that indicate he has pulled out of Sergei Mozyakin's farewell match due to a knee injury.

The good news here is that this knee injury appears to be a relatively minor one, with Ovechkin hoping to resume training in a little over a week's time. That being said it was enough of a concern that he has pulled out of the Mozyakin's farewell match, which wasn't expected to be the most grueling of contests.

It is unclear if Ovechkin suffered the injury during the NHL season, during the Match of the Year, or at some other point during the offseason.

"This injury is not too serious and did not prevent Ovechkin from playing in the Game of the Year a week ago," said a source from Match TV.

"But now Alexander has decided to take care of himself so that he can begin full training in 10 days."

10 days does not sound like too severe of a layoff and hopefully that is a sign that Ovechkin will be ready when NHL training camps get under way in roughly 8 weeks.
