Oilers risk losing forward to waivers on Sunday.

The Edmonton Oilers are the only team to place a player on waivers today.

The Edmonton Oilers have taken a risk on Sunday.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman just moment ago, the Oilers have placed veteran forward Derek Ryan on waivers today. This means that the 38 year old centerman will now be eligible to be claimed by any other team in the NHL that wishes to submit a claim for him.

Ryan will be an interesting option on waivers given his wealth of NHL experience, experience that has come while playing for a number of teams around the league. Ryan has appeared in 603 regular season games over his career, amassing 82 goals and 126 assists for a total of 208 points over that stretch. He also has 60 games of playoff experience under his belt with 3 goals and 7 assists for 10 career points in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Additionally Ryan is on a very affordable contract that comes in just over the league minimum, which is another factor that could make him appealing to any teams considering a potential waiver claim. Ryan is currently in the second year of a two year deal that carries an average annual value and salary cap hit of $900,000.

We won't learn Ryan's fate until noon tomorrow, but should he go unclaimed I suspect the Oilers will look to send him down to the American Hockey League to join the Bakersfield Condors.

Stay tuned for more on this developing story.
