Oilers GM Ken Holland: Mike Smith won't play next season!
It looks like he may be finished!
Is the Mike Smith era over in Edmonton? It sure looks like it could be headed that way.
Despite the fact that the 40 year old goaltender still has one more year remaining on his contract that was doled out by overly generous general manager Ken Holland, he's not expected to play next season, and will likely be placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve at the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign.
Of course, Holland was able to snag goaltender Jack Campbell from the Toronto Maple Leafs, inking the Michigan native to a five year pact worth $5 million per season, a healthy raise from what the Leafs were willing to pay the man known as "Soup". Additionally, Holland brought aboard former Red Wings third stringer Calvin Pickard, though it will likely be Stuart Skinner serving as the main backup to Campbell after the departure of Mikko Koskinen to HC Lugano of the Swiss National League.
"He looks to me from afar like a guy that is getting better all the time," Holland said of Campbell. "He’s competitive, he’s accountable. I think with him and Stu Skinner will he’ll have a good tandem.”
Oilers fans, how excited are you to see a fresh young combination between the pipes this season?
