NHL Player Safety comes down on Max Domi.
NHL Player Safety comes down on Max Domi for elbowing Garnet Hathaway on Sunday.
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi has found himself in hot water on Monday morning.
In an official announcement from the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety, it was revealed that Domi will now receive a fine in the amount of $5,000 for elbowing Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway on Sunday night. The $5,000 amount is the maximum the league can fine Domi under the current rules of the collective bargaining agreement.
I suspect that Hathaway will be public enemy number one in Toronto going forward after he was involved in a number of heated incidents during Sunday night's game against the Maple Leafs, which is of course exactly what you expect a player in Hathaway's role to do during the course of a game.
Hathaway was involved in an altercation with Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe which resulted in the two men dropping the gloves and that in turn resulted in what appears to be a fairly serious injury to McCabe. Combine that with Domi being fined for an illegal blow he delivered to Hathaway during the course of the same game and I suspect that Hathaway will have a target on his back when these two teams next meet.
Here's a look a the elbow that landed Domi in trouble, one that was admittedly pretty blatant and certainly not one where there is much room for debate.
The Leafs and Flyers will go head to head again on March 25th when the Flyers travel to Toronto, and it will be interesting to see if any of the incidents from last night's game lead to any fireworks at that stage of the regular season.
