NHL player safety department boss George Parros received a lot of negative comments when he decided to suspend Anaheim Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano about two weeks ago. This suspension, still debatable, ended Cogliano ironman streak of 830 straight games played in the NHL. This was a really delicate situation for Parros, giving the fact the he and Cogliano used to play together in Anaheim.
«Cogliano had an unbelievable run there, a streak, and the last thing that I wanted to do was get in the way of history.
When things arise, sensational issues arise, I think it’s very important for our department to get out ahead of those and explain. Explain things, explain any questions, own up to them and I’m happy to do that always.
We make a lot of decisions that aren’t always met with great accord.» -George Parros
One NHL governor said that this was a very difficult test for Parros and the according to him, he passed it. By making a decision like this, Parros sent a a message on how he will run the player safety department.
Parros also received a lot of heat when he decided to fine Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown for $10,000 for crosscheking Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Justin Schultz, a gesture believed to be really more dangerous than the Cogliano hit.
What do you think? Do you still think Parros went a little too hard on Cogliano?
