NHL calls out Oilers forward for “diving.”

The National Hockey League is shaming one of Edmonton's forwards for repeated acts of diving.

The National Hockey League is publicly shaming one of Edmonton's veteran forwards for repeated acts of diving and quite frankly I would like to see the league step up their efforts in this regard and get this kind of behavior out of the game for good.

On Monday morning, the NHL published a video on their official website in which they indicated that they would be issuing a fine to Oilers forward Jeff Skinner following multiple incidents of diving this season. Along with the public embarrassment of being known as a diver, Skinner will also receive a fine in the amount of $2,000 for what is his second infraction of this nature.

According to a report from NHL insider Chris Johnston, The first infraction occurred on October 22nd of this season during a game against the Carolina Hurricanes, but as is always the case with a first infraction for diving the player receives only a discretionary warning for the behavior. That being said, the league has now caught Skinner diving a second time, during a game against the New York Rangers on the 23rd of December, and it is that second infraction that has resulted in the fine and the video being published on the NHL's website.

I know that $2,000 is probably a drop in the bucket for most players on an NHL salary, especially for a player like Skinner who has earned north of $100 million over his NHL career, but they might feel differently about the damage done to their reputation when it comes to being publicly shamed for diving. NHL players are well regarded for being some of the toughest athletes in all of professional sports and a reputation for diving certainly doesn't line up with that at all.
