NHL brings back iconic 1990s Starter jackets... at an absolutely ridiculous price point

What a joke. Are all hockey fans millionaires now?

I still remember when I received my first NHL Starter jacket back in Grade 8...

I was King Shit.

There was no touching me as I walked around town on cloud nine.

A couple of my buds got theirs and soon there was a gang of us walking around school with matching Leafs, Canucks, Sharks, Bruins and Flames Starter jackets. We probably looked absolutely ridiculous, but to us we looked like we were the hottest shit in town.

You remember the ones, right? An absolute icon of 90s fashion.

These bad boys:

Well... they're back!

Kinda...

According to Oilers fan Dee Mandy, the Oilers are selling a new version of the classic Start jacket through Ice District Authentics for a whopping $260 CAD.

Are you kidding me!?

Honestly, I don't know why I'm surprised. I can't even afford to buy a jersey these days, a windbreaker should be way out of my range. The fact of the matter is that being an NHL fan and supporting your team is something that's no longer in reach for the majority of hockey fans. Tickets, jerseys, apparel, it's all out of reach for most fans and it's up to the elite to fund this sport for better or worse.

Call me old fashioned, but I pine for the days of old where you'd see families lining up outside the rink to get tickets. The kids would share a popcorn and Mom and Dad might have a couple beers at the game. Now, that scenario will cost you close to a cool grand...

At that cost, I'll pass. Frankly, I've enjoyed watching more junior hockey live in recent seasons. It's fast, it's physical and I can get tickets for under $20. It's tough to beat that in my books.

Besides... I've still got my old Starter jackets collecting dust in the closet. Maybe I'll bust them out the next time someone kicks me some NHL tickets for free because Lord knows I'm not going to dig into my own wallet to watch a random weekday snoozefest between two teams buried in the middle of the league's standings.
