New information points to Mitch Marner’s situation being “delicate” in Toronto

Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has not confirmed or denied any of the Mitch Marner rumors, but it does feel more and more like the forward will stay put in Toronto for the 2024-25 season. But there is something else that the GM did not do, hinting at some possible changes in Marner’s future in Toronto.

Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun points out how delicate the situation remains. Treliving has said little publicly about re-signing Marner. A year ago, however, he had already stated that re-signing Auston Matthews and William Nylander was at the top of his “to-do” list. Nothing on Marner.

As you know, the signings Treliving talked about did take place: Matthews was extended for four years back in August, while Nylander got eight years in January.

Nothing on Marner here too?

We won’t find out speaking to Marner either since his camp also confirmed that he wouldn’t field any Leafs-related questions as he spoke at his charity and its annual summer events.

“And then in the past few days, Marner’s PR team made it clear he would not be taking Leafs-related questions as he spoke about his charity, the Marner Assist Foundation, and its annual summer events. That edict wasn’t issued prior to Marner charity events in the past,” writes Koshan.

Another hint that the situation is quite delicate in Toronto two months before training camp.

There was a feeling that a trade could have taken place earlier this summer with Treliving possibly able to convince Marner to waive his no-move clause, but that is not going to happen, leaving the GM with his hands tied.

There is speculation that both camps could be willing to discuss a contract extension, though Treliving declined to address that speculation during his press conference on the opening day of Free agency.

You know that means more will be said about it as the offseason unfolds.
