The small arena always gets players talking…
On opening day of free agency, the Arizona Coyotes signed forward Jason Zucker to a one-year, $5.3 million contract. The veteran was looking for a significant payday after posting 27 goals and 48 points for the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, his most since his NHL career-high 33 with the Minnesota Wild in 2017-18, and got what he wanted in Arizona.
Some fans wondered how Zucker could choose to move to the smallest market of the NHL, playing at Arizona State University in the 4,600-seat facility. These same fans were shocked to find out that Zucker isn’t only thrilled to have signed with the Coyotes, but is also seeking to convince them to sign him to a long-term contract after the 2023-24 season.
No one saw this coming, and some fans on social media quickly pointed out that Zucker might need to experience the small crowd and uncertain future in the desert before making such a statement.
It has been reported that the Coyotes are currently looking at a half-dozen sites to build an arena and entertainment complex after a public vote defeated their bid to build one in Tempe, where they were hoping to build a 16,000-seat arena and an entertainment district on city-owned land.
Zucker might want to wait and see what happens next with the Coyotes before signing on the dotted line…
