There is more to be said about Mike Babcock. The Columbus Blue Jackets did admit they made a mistake hiring him as head coach earlier this summer, and since he’s been out, the incident has prompted some to come out with stories of past experiences with the controversial head coach.

During his time in Detroit, Babcock was the first NHL head coach of defenseman Brendan Smith, who now plays for the New Jersey Devils. He recently admitted that he’s not surprised at all with the latest situation involving Babcock and shared some of his own experiences with the bench boss.

“Yeah, I have lots,” Smith said laughing, when asked by NJ Advance Media about his experiences with Babcock. “I don’t even know if I want to unfold too much about it. I think, for me, he was my first coach coming in and was probably not the easiest coach to have – especially as a young guy. How everything unfolded, I almost could have foreseen it.

“I was hoping things wouldn’t go that route.”

Babcock resigned Sunday after investigations by the team, NHL, and NHLPA into his conduct during his brief tenure as head coach after Babcock asked to view players’ phones and photos during off-season meetings. The ordeal was made public when the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast’s Paul Bissonnette revealed that Babcock had asked team captain Boone Jenner to see his phone and displayed Jenner’s personal photos on his office television.

“What I can say about Babcock is he is a mastermind of the game, he really sees the game very well,” Smith added. “So I can understand that he can help a club. I just thought maybe the extracurricular stuff would maybe stay out of it. Unfortunately I don’t have all the info so I can’t really comment on everything, but for myself coming in, it was challenging at times.”

The NHL should get the message now.
