The Columbus Blue Jackets admitted they made a mistake hiring Mike Babcock as head coach earlier this summer. As you know, Babs resigned Sunday after investigations by the team, NHL, and NHLPA into his conduct during his brief tenure as head coach after Babcock asked to view players’ phones and photos during off-season meetings.

The ordeal was made public when the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast’s Paul Bissonnette revealed that Babcock had asked team captain Boone Jenner to see his phone and displayed Jenner’s personal photos on his office television.

The situation got a lot of people talking, but one person that did not want to comment on it is Toronto Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner. On Wednesday morning when the Leafs spoke to the media as the team begins training camp, Marner was asked about Babcock’s investigation and resignation in Columbus and only had this to say:

“I don’t really want to comment on that too much. Whatever happened, happened…He’s not with our team anymore. My focus is not on any other team or any other person.”

While it is stunning to see such restraint from a guy that was humiliated in the past by Babcock, it was a good answer from Marner.

As you may recall, Babcock was fired in Toronto when an incident with Marner was made public. The head coach requested in a private meeting with the young Leafs forward and had asked him to rank his teammates’ work ethic, then revealed the rankings to the team. Another former player, Johan Franzen, accused Babcock of being verbally abusive when they worked together in Detroit.

It was expected that Babcock would be under much scrutiny when coming back to the NHL, but the guy will apparently never change.

Maybe that’s why Marner doesn’t feel the need to comment. He wants everyone, including the NHL, to move on from Babs.
