He's now forever in the Toronto Maple Leafs record books, and he's being honored by the National Hockey League for his scorching hot month of November.
Leafs forward Mitch Marner has tied the legendary Darryl Sittler in team history by having recorded at least one point in 18 straight games, and did so as part of an extremely productive month in which he tallied six goals and recording 20 points over 15 games played. For his efforts, he was named the NHL's 3rd start of the month.
It was Marner who kept the fans on the edge of their seats all night, finally tallying the historic marker late in the 3rd period by hitting the empty net to put the capper on a 3-1 victory over the visiting San Jose Sharks.
“Pretty ugly way to get things done,” Marner said of his point streak. “But I love these guys, every time one of them got it they were looking at me for the empty net. They’ve done a lot to help me with a lot of these streaks.
“It’s a special moment to have my family in the crowd, to have grown up in this city, be a fan of this team and have my name with a couple of unbelievable players.
“But winning the game is more important.”
Marner will have a chance to overtake Sittler on Saturday night as he and the Leafs travel to sunny Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.
