Matt Rempe taunts the crowd, gets ejected for dirty hit.

New York Rangers enforcer Matt Rempe was tossed from the game on Friday night after a dirty hit.

New York Rangers enforcer Matt Rempe may very well get a call from the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety over a dangerous hit he delivered on Friday night.

Rempe was tossed from the game by officials on Friday after he delivered a hit to the back of Dallas Stars star defenseman Miro Heiskanen, a hit that would come relatively late in the game. A little less than midway through the third period, Rempe drove Heiskanen hard into the boards with what looked like a forearm to the back of the head and neck of Heiskanen, one that caught the Stars defenseman completely unawares.

Here's a look at the replay of that hit:

It was just Rempe's 5th appearance of the regular season for the Rangers and his first since being called back up from the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack.

Making matters worse for Rempe here is that this serves as his 4th ejection from an NHL game in a career that spans a total of just 22 NHL games so far, which is a pretty high ratio of ejections compared to number of games played.

The league's Department of Player Safety has shown a tendency to dole out severe punishments for blows to the head and Rempe was ejected from this game under the elbowing rule and not for boarding, so I do wonder if this will be enough to earn him additional discipline during the holiday roster freeze in the NHL.

The Rangers did however manage to hold off the ensuing Stars power play and would go on to win the game by a score of 3-1, so at least Rempe did not cost his team in that regard.

Stay tuned for more as we await a decision from NHL Player Safety.
