Matt Rempe publicly called out by Don Cherry

Grapes is once again speaking out!

Michael W.

New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe is nothing short of an indicating physical specimen, standing at a towering 6'9 (the tallest player in the NHL since Zdeno Chara) and 241 lbs. And he's demonstrated so far in his brief National Hockey League career that he's more than willing to throw his massive frame around and make life difficult on New York's opponents.

He was recently seen training with former NHL enforcer Georges Laraque on his fighting technique, and who better to learn from than the man who racked up over 1,100 penalty minutes during his career?

However, this isn't sitting right with former Boston Bruins head coach and iconic Hockey Night in Canada host Don Cherry. While speaking on a recent episode of "The Don Cherry’s Grapevine Podcast", Cherry voiced his criticism to what he feels could be the leadup to a major suspension of Rempe:

"I don't think it's a good idea. The National Hockey League lets on that everything is spontaneous. You don't train to be a fighter. I don't think the NHL would be too happy. I think Rempe is setting himself up to be really suspended if he hurts somebody," he said.

Laraque himself wrote the following on social media regarding his on-ice training sessions with Rempe and warned the rest of the NHL that they'd better watch out for him:

"I’m training Matt Rempe and Tyrel Bauer for hockey fighting, this week in Edmonton, at the Silent Ice arena. If you thought Rempe was a problem this year in the @NHL, wait till you see him this coming season…," Laraque shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In the 17 games that Rempe played in for the Rangers after being brought up from the American Hockey League, he scored a goal with an assist while also amassing a whopping 71 penalty minutes.
