Mathieu Olivier destroys Ryan Lomberg in heavyweight showdown.

A battle of heavyweights between Calgary's Ryan Lomberg and Columbus' Mathieu Olivier.

The fans who tuned in to today's matchup between the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio were treated to something special late in the game's second period.

The Blue Jackets had taken a commanding 3-1 lead and late in the second Flames veteran winger Ryan Lomberg tried to jump start some life back into his team by dropping the gloves. Lomberg would do so by challenging one of the National Hockey League's toughest customers, and in my personal opinion the most dangerous fighter in the league today, in the form of Blue Jackets winger Mathieu Olivier.

Unfortunately for Lomberg this would be a case of him biting off more than he can chew.

Olivier lived up to his reputation almost instantly when he rocked Lomberg with the very first punch he threw during the exchange, immediately putting the Flames forward off balance for the rest of the fight. From there Olivier would pepper Lomberg with shot after shot as, much to his credit, Lomberg continued to bounce back to his feet if only to eat more punishment. Lomberg would throw some heavy shots of his own but Olivier never seemed to be phased by the offense being directed his way and continued to punish Lomberg for challenging him.

It was a great show for the fans but this may have been a case of Lomberg being a little too tough for his own good.
