Marner, Muzzin and Keefe comment on the Leafs' humiliating loss in Pittsburgh.

Embarrassing.

Getting blown out in the National Hockey League is never going to be a good feeling no matter how you slice it, but the blow out that the Toronto Maple Leafs were on the wrong side of on Saturday night was something else entirely.

The Leafs were downright humiliated by a depleted Pittsburgh Penguins lineup by a score of 7 - 1, and when I say depleted I mean that in the truest sense of the word. The Penguins were without captain Sidney Crosby, star forward Evgeni Malkin, their number one defenseman in Kris Letang, forward Bryan Rust, and forward Jeff Carter but despite missing a huge number of their regulars they were easily able to dispatch a largely lifeless Maple Leafs squad.

This now moves the Maple Leafs to 2-3-1 on the season and, although it is still very early, that is definitely not the start to the season that the Leafs were hoping for. Following the embarrassing loss several members of the Maple Leafs offered up comments in their post game media availability, but none of the responses will bring much comfort to dismayed fans in Toronto.

Mitch Marner was up first and touched on his offensive struggles to start the season.

"Obviously it's not going in," said Marner. "I think we've produced good opportunities... I thought we have had good looks. We haven't had a lot of second opportunities."

Although there is no doubt that Marner is failing to live up to expectations to start the regular season, head coach Sheldon Keefe shied away from piling on to the talented forward.

"He's not the only one here on our team that's got to find their game," said Keefe of Marner.

That being said, it was also clear that the Maple Leafs bench boss was not at all amused by his team's performance on the evening.

"I have a lot of thoughts. Not many good ones," admitted the Leafs head coach.

Defenseman Jake Muzzin was not the least bit happy with the loss, characterizing it as an unacceptable performance from him and his fellow Leafs.

"We've got to go back to the drawing board... We're going to have to work a lot harder to win. It's inexcusable. Myself, everyone. We need to be better."

For now those are just words however and after a shaky start to the season fans are going to want to see those words put into action.
