Maple Leafs waive two players as they trim down roster.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are making some of their final cuts to the roster, waiving a pair of players on Sunday

The Toronto Maple Leafs are making a pair of roster moves on Sunday, although more will be needed before the regular season officially gets underway for the Leafs.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, the Maple Leafs have waived two players on Sunday. The first comes as little surprise with veteran goaltender Matt Murray being placed on waivers, and it will be even less surprising when he inevitably clears the waiver process and remains in the Maple Leafs organization as he is still recovering from the hip surgery that cut short his last season with the Maple Leafs.

The second player to be waived is 26 year old defenseman Marshall Rifai and this one also comes as little surprise, but the possibility of Rifai being claimed doesn't seem like such a stretch. Rifai was a solid player for the Maple Leafs during their preseason games and seemed like the kind of player that could provide valuable depth to the Maple Leafs blue line with injury concerns around players like Jake McCabe, Chris Tanev, and of course Jani Hakanpaa.

The good news for the Maple Leafs here is that teams usually aren't looking to add players to their roster this close to the start of the regular season, with most teams attempting to trim their rosters down, but the bad news is there may very well be a team in the market for a depth defenseman.

The Pittsburgh Penguins just lost defenseman John Ludvig on waivers after he was claimed by the Colorado Avalanche, so it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility for Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas to take a look at a defenseman from his former team. Then again the Penguins did not have room for Ludvig on their main roster which is why they waived him in the first place, and any attempts to send Rifai down to the American Hockey League after claiming him from the Leafs would only result in him having to pass through waivers once again.

We will officially find out tomorrow around noon EST if either player waived by the Leafs today has been claimed. Stay tuned.
