Maple Leafs new GM Brad Treliving already faces first big obstacle in Toronto

He knew it wasn’t going to be easy…

Brad Treliving is aware he has a lot to do in Toronto as the new general manager of the Maple Leafs. On Thursday, when he was introduced as the 18th general manager in franchise history, Treliving immediately stated his top priority in meeting star centre Auston Matthews, set to enter the final year of his contract and eligible to sign an extension July 1.

But like me, you know there is so much more to do in Toronto and unfortunately for Treliving and the Maple Leafs, management already faces a tough obstacle as insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed that the new GM will not be allowed to attend the NHL Draft in Nashville at the end of June.

While I am sure he will find a way to send his message and give his opinion on possible transactions during the event, it is more difficult to connect with other present general managers on the floor.

Nevertheless, team president Brendan Shanahan will be at the table and able to make the right call, especially if something huge can be done amongst the so-called “Core Four” of high-paid offensive talent led by Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander.

Nylander too can sign an extension July 1, while Matthews and Marner will also have their full no-movement clauses kick in the same day. Nylander gets a 10-team list and Tavares has a full no-move with two years left on his contract.

Maple Leafs, you better keep Treliving in the loop!
