With the game still tied at 0-0 in the second period, the intensity went up a notch between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ducks in Anaheim. Leafs forward Bobby McMann delivered a massive hit on Pavel Mintyukov, who never saw it coming and was crushed into the boards.
The young defenseman appeared shaken up and was slow to get to the Ducks’ bench.
As for McMann, he was immediately grabbed by Mintyukov’s teammate and former Leafs Ilya Lyubushkin, who dropped the gloves for sending his fellow blue liner hard into the boards.
Quick blows were exchanged before both men fell to the ice and the officials started handing out penalties.
The referees called for a major penalty in order to review the play, but in the end McMann got a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit.
However I must say that I believe this was a clean, shoulder to shoulder hit on an unexpecting Mintyukov. Fans, pundits and reporters were outraged on social media, demanding explanation on why McMann was banned from the rest of the game.
As for Lyubushkin, he received a total of 17 minutes of penalty: a fighting major, an instigator penalty and a 10-minute misconduct.
To make matters worse for the Leafs, the Ducks scored the first goal on the game, getting the lead halfway through the contest as Frank Vatrano scored shorthanded.
Just a brutal sequence of events if you like Toronto.
