The door isn't shut on a return, but this isn't ideal.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and goaltender Ilya Samsonov were not able to reach an agreement before today's arbitration hearing.
The report is that Samsonov and his camp are seeking a contract with an AAV of $4.9 million after he posted good numbers in his first year with the Leafs, and would be an over $3 million raise on the $1.8 million that he made last season. However, the Leafs are allegedly not willing to go anything over $2.4 million.
An arbiter is now going to decide what Samsonov's salary should be for next season. The Leafs can either accept the ruling or reject it, meaning that the Russian's time with the team will effectively be over.
