Loud boos in Toronto for the American national anthem.
Hockey fans in Canada continue to boo the American national anthem during NHL games.
If you thought the Four Nations Face-Off would put an end to the anthem controversy that has come to the National Hockey League's doorstep, guess again.
It would seem that fans in Canada aren't quite done expressing their displeasure which they have done by protesting the performing of the American national anthem during NHL games hosted in Canada. On Saturday night, angry Canadian hockey fans were once again out in full force, this time with Scotiabank Arena in Toronto becoming the site of controversy.
The Toronto Maple Leafs welcomed the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and, once again, there were very audible boos from the Canadian crowd as the American national anthem was played for the Hurricanes before the game. This one sounded like it was much more than an isolated pocket of fans as well, with the boos being very loud in the short clip below:
It seems clear that the league itself is not a big fan of these protests as there have been visible efforts made to curtail the amount of booing during the performing of the national anthems, including instructions from the in-house announcers to please respect the anthem of each country being represented on the ice. Unfortunately it seems this has done little to curtail the amount of booing coming from at least some hockey fans in Canada, as was once again evident tonight.
