Legendary NHL broadcaster Mike Lange passes away at 76 years old
“Ladies and gentlemen... Elvis!... has just left the building!”
The family of legendary Pittsburgh Penguins broadcaster Mike Lange have confirmed to media that he passed away earlier this week at 76 years old.
Lange was the Penguins' play by play broadcaster from 1976 until 2021 and is probably most known for his unique, over the top usage of catch phrases in his play calling.
Who can forget Mike Lange classics like, "Scratch my back with a rusty hack saw!" or "He beat him like a rented mule!"?
And of course, his signature call following an OT Penguins victory:
"Ladies and gentlemen... Elvis!... has just left the building!"
Lange had a unique style all his own and if anyone tried to recreate it today, they'd certainly be seen as a copycat. Lange was a one in a million broadcaster and we were so lucky to bear witness to his incredible career in the game.
RIP, Mike Lange. Gone, but never forgotten.
